Christmas music and cookie baking, let the holiday Christmas music and cookie baking, let the holiday season begin. From @nytcooking, Chewy Brownie Cookies. Crisp edges, gooey center and chocolatey. Yep, your fav brownie in cookie form. And Soy Sauce Chocolate Chip Cookies! I first tried these scrumptious cookies at the annual artisan fair @asianartmuseum from @eatingwithedmund. The soy sauce rounds out the flavor in the cookie, subtle and yummy. I tweaked it just a bit by adding toffee. Crispy, chewy buttery it’s a keeper! Sweet Rice Stuffing or "Gnaw Mai Fan" is a perfect Sweet Rice Stuffing or "Gnaw Mai Fan" is a perfect example of how many Chinese American families incorporate Cantonese cuisine into the Thanksgiving feast. Instead of bread stuffing, glutinous rice filled with bbq pork, Chinese sausage (lop Cheung), dried shrimp and shiitake mushrooms then seasoned with soy and oyster sauce is our go-to dressing with turkey. A new joint on Polk St for Galbijjim. Perfect on a A new joint on Polk St for Galbijjim. Perfect on a cold, rainy night. Even better it’s just a couple of blocks away. The star is the short rib stew, it comes with rice cakes, cheese and noods. The meat is tender and flavorful and off the bone. We initially thought the portions were smaller than Daeho but without bones, it’s a lot of meat. Don’t skip their other dishes, garlic chicken noodles, dumplings and fried chicken were all good. The Banchan was pretty standard. Luckily we made reservations, a dreary Thursday night yet it filled up quickly. If you are in the mood for Galbijjim and don’t want to wait at Daeho’s this is a great alternative. Service was friendly but slowed as they got busy, a little understaffed at this point. Maybe they didn’t anticipate being this busy! Recommend checking them out! Here is a fun fact California leads the good old USA in nuts, fruits and veggies, easily a third of all production. Oh and dairy too! Guess who works in this industry? Fun facts to the incoming administration. Energized, we headed to the city. Went to Union Square and walked around, had lunch before hitting the @sf_curran for Kimberly Akimbo musical. I’ve been spoiled by being in NYC lately. This was cute. Then hit @asianartmuseum for their Hallyu exhibit, all things in K-culture. Their annual artisan fair was going on, got some great kids books, artisan soy sauces and cookies! Walked over to @maum.market in Hayes Valley, Asian artisans for foods and crafts. My fav @songbird.patisserie croissants! Finally, what could be better than dinner made by @jleong22 and @macg92! From @tomcolicchio new book #whyicook, Kale, chorizo, clam soup. delicious! I’m from California, why would I have Mexican fo I’m from California, why would I have Mexican food in NEW YORK CITY. Carnitas Ramirez in LES right off Clinton, that’s why. Homemade corn tortillas, pickled onions and your choice of a mild green salsa or spicy red. Yeah, I used the green salsa, don’t judge me! The star is the pork cooked traditionally, the entire pig is cooked, head to tail. I chose pork belly, carnitas and lengua. So good, moist, flavorful each with a different texture. Yum. Casual, tables outside and a counter on the front wall facing in. Service is quick and friendly. Tacos are priced NYC scale 5 bucks a taco, still a deal! Marinade beef, which could be flank steak or special occasion Ribeye, in soy sauce and fish or oyster sauce. As it marinates, make the sauce. This time I made the tamarind sauce version. Damn it’s good. Tart, spicy, from tamarind, chili flakes, fish sauce…the very definition of umami. Tamarind paste can be found in Asian markets. Threw the flank steak on the grill , stir fried some bok choy, dinner in no time flat. Fall is definitely in the air! I spent the day mak Fall is definitely in the air! I spent the day making Curry Chicken with rice and an apple pie. Comfort food to take my mind off the election. As much as I like cooking from scratch, I do “cheat” when it comes to curries. This curry chicken is made easy with curry paste blocks found in Japanese stores and most Asian Grocers. Serve over hot rice with Fukujinzuke, Japanese pickles. I like using bone-in chicken pieces so it takes a little longer. Dinner on the table in about an hour! From bookstores to restaurants, like @fourkings__ or @misterjius in SF or @yuandmebooks in NYC, they are breathing new life into our community. Every time we are in NYC we hit up @potluckclubny for creative cocktails and delicious food. Ya gotta get their dumplings, rice noodle roll chow fun, and Fried chicken and Chive Biscuits. We sampled a trio of recipes from the book and I’ll be making all of them soon! The Miso Pork Balls were delicious but my favorite was the Deviled Eggs with crispy bread crumbs and pork floss. Much to Jamie’s embarrassment, I was fangirling meeting all of these amazing women. @hettymckinnon whose mom is from the same area in China as mine @sohlae say no to Momofuku😉 and @nom_life whose IG serves as my bucket list bible of places to visit & eat at.
